The Next Generation of HDYHAU Surveys

Introducing Advanced Attribution: a rebuilt "How did you hear about us?" survey that resolves every answer down to a name you can spend against.

The post-purchase survey hasn't changed since its inception. One question. One flat list of static options. One answer recorded at checkout.

That design worked, because discovery worked the same way. Customers found brands through a few easy-to-measure channels such as Google and Facebook. "Google," "Facebook," and "Friend or family" were enough to build a media plan against.

That era is over. Your customers now find you through creators, podcasts, Connected TV, and AI assistants - channels with no click to track, no reliable pixel, and no clean hold-out to test against.

Someone initially discovers you through a creator on YouTube, hears you mentioned on a podcast, and buys days later without ever touching an ad. Then your survey asks them to pick one channel off a flat, static list. When it's time to decide whether to put more money behind one of them, you're left guessing.

Today, that changes. We're launching Advanced Attribution - the biggest change to "How did you hear about us?" since we started asking it in 2018.

We built it from a billion HDYHAU questions served and hundreds of conversations with brands who kept saying the same thing: they need clarity at the top of the funnel for channels they can't measure.

The problem with single-response surveys.

The problem with traditional post-purchase surveys is the format, not what's being asked.

One question. One flat list. One response. That format can hold a channel and nothing else, so it asks a customer to recall a memory and pick the closest label. Marketers measure in channels. Customers don't remember in channels.

Take three customers who all bought because of the same creator partnership.

  • Customer 1 remembers it as YouTube → a creator → the handle

  • Customer 2 remembers it as Instagram → an influencer → the name

  • Customer 3 remembers it as a podcast → the show

Each of them is telling the truth. But the survey only has room for the first word, so it records YouTube, Instagram, and "Influencer". Three channels, three lines in your report. The exact channel + placement combination that actually worked is lost.

Multiply that across every response you collect, and you get thousands of answers and not one name you can act on.

This could mean renewing the wrong creator, cutting a podcast that's working, and building next quarter's plan on a number that said "Instagram" when the real answer was a person's name.

If your survey stops at "Instagram," every budgeting decision downstream is an educated guess.

So we rebuilt the HDYHAU. Three principles guided the redesign.

1. Your survey should match how your customers think, not how a marketer thinks.

In the old design, one flat list forced every customer to think in channels.

Nobody remembers your media plan. They remember a creator, a show, a friend who sent them a link.

In the new design, the survey adapts to how each customer thinks. It asks the way they would naturally answer, then follows up to resolve that answer down to the exact placement behind it. Not "influencer." The name. Not "podcast." The episode.

In early live testing, brands saw 49% more complete placement-level responses from the same order volume, the same survey placement, and the same response rates. That leads to a fundamentally different ROAS picture and a different allocation decision next quarter.

2. Your survey response options shouldn't be static.

A longer drop-down is still a finite drop-down, and it's stale the day it ships. Keeping response options current meant someone had to manually add every new podcast or creator, usually after launch and sometimes never.

When the list goes stale, live campaigns collapse into a generic "Influencer" or "Other" bucket. 4 out of 5 brands we audited were missing a real investment from their survey choices entirely. Not underreported. Missing.

In the new design, the list keeps itself current. Advanced Attribution turns your live media plan into the survey's answer key. Through integrations with Agentio, Podscribe, Vibe, and Google Sheets, your active campaigns flow into your response options automatically, the moment you start spending.

3. Your survey shouldn't require manual work for higher fidelity.

Cleaning up "Other" responses meant reading through every write-in by hand to find the podcast or creator you were already tracking. On a good week, that's an afternoon of someone's time. On a bad one, it never happens, and the signal sits in a column nobody opens.

In the new design, the survey resolves those write-ins itself by mapping them to the correct placement category instead of leaving them stuck under "Other."

The Modern Post-Purchase Survey

Together, these three product principles are what we're launching today: Advanced Attribution.

This matters most for the channels that are growing the fastest. Podcasts, CTV, creator content, and AI assistants tend to leave no click behind, so your pixels credit whatever touch came last, usually search or direct, and the show that created the demand never shows up at all. The post-purchase survey catches what the pixel can't, but one that stops at "podcast" still only tells you the category is working. Advanced Attribution fills in the gaps.

"Knowing a customer heard about a brand through a podcast doesn't provide advertisers with enough information. We need to understand which shows influence purchases, so we can make better decisions about where to invest and how to scale campaigns. Advanced Attribution gives us that additional level of insight directly from the customer, helping connect individual podcast placements more clearly to revenue."

Our core belief hasn't changed: ask your customers directly. We're just extracting far deeper value from their answers.
